TKGS uses the 6-step
Future Problem Solving Framework

to engage Sec 1 - 4 students to understand school and community problems and brainstorm solutions. With teachers acting as facilitators, students leverage on their Community Problem Solving (CmPS) projects to learn 21st century life-skills and serve the community.

2011 GCE O Level Results



We are pleased to report that the 2011 cohort of Secondary Four students did exceptionally well for the GCE O Level Examination with the 99.4% passing 5 or more subjects and 59.2% achieving 5 or more distinctions.There were 14 subjects with more than 60% distinctions. This includes core subjects - English Language, Combined Humanities, History, Geography, Literature, Mathematics, Physics and Biology. Full results.

Kimberly Lim - Singapore's first individual world title at the Optimist World Championship in New Zealand
She has done it again! Despite not doing well in the first few races, Kimberly (4/7) kept her cool and emerged victorious through sheer grit and determination. Full article.

TKGian awarded 1st Singapore Olympic Foundation
Peter Lim Sports Scholarship

Zandra Chew Yann, from Sec 3E6 (seen here with our Principal, Mrs Phyllis Lim) received the inaugural Singapore Olympic Foundation - Peter Lim Sports Scholarship. The scholarship aims to help promising young athletes achieve their goals in sports performance and also help serve to support outstanding athletes from financially-challenged backgrounds, to facilitate their pursuit of sporting excellence. Congratulations to Zandra!

    


Humanities Day 2011
Towards a Greener Future, Building on our Rich Past

5 August 2011 marked a triple celebration. In conjunction with the annual TKGS Humanities Day, the Humanities Department organized the inaugural ¡°ThinK Green , Singapore ¡± Environmental Convention and the launch of the first South East ¡°Green Stories¡± e-book. This was an event put together with the TKGS Green Auditors Club, in collaboration with the South East Community Development Council (SECDC), the National Environmental Agency (NEA), and PUB , the National Water Agency. UK Trip Presentation

As part of the launch of the EZ COE EL (Primary) at St Hilda's Primary School on 7 July, TKGS Drama coordinator Mr Firdaus Sukor and HOD EL Ms Chee Bee Phaik shared their learning from the UK study trip in a presentation on 'EL through Drama' strategies to East Zone schools.Click here for the presentation slides.

    


Learning Journey to UK

In May 2011, a group of EL, Literature and Drama teachers from Tanjong Katong Girls' School and Pasir Ris Crest Secondary School went on a COE Study Trip to the UK .

For the EZ COE EL, the objectives of this learning journey were the study of how drama techniques can be used in the teaching of EL and forging partnerships with interested schools in the UK which have a strong focus on EL and Drama, for greater learning in this area. With these aims, the group of 7 teachers and 40 students visited Kings Norton Girls' School in Birmingham and Tonbridge Grammar School in Kent . More Details >>

12th Global Chinese Student Writing Competition

Huang Yizhe of 3E6 has come in Third in the 12 th Global Chinese Students Writing Competition. Over 7 millions of students from 25 countries worldwide had participated in this competition, and Huang Yizhe had outshined the other participant and won the award. And her tutor Miss Wang Fang has also received the best tutor award in this competition.

    


Red Cross Youth Recognition Day

On 23 rd July 2011 , it was Red Cross Youth Recognition Day. It was a day whereby all the Red Cross Units and cadets are recognised for their remarkable contribution. Low Jun Yu, The ex-Chairperson of TKGRCY (Tanjong Katong Girls' School) of 2010-2011 Committee was elected as the best cadet in her unit and she was rewarded a Director's Award for her remarkable contribution to the school's Red Cross Unit. Rio Tinto Big Science Competition

A total of 138 students took part in the Rio Tinto Big Science Competition organised by Australian Science Innovations on 25 May 2011. This Big Science competition tests the students' science knowledge and problem- solving skills through a one-hour paper consisting of 30 multiple- choice questions written by the Australian Council for Educational Research. TOP 5 BEST PERFORMING
Library Staff 2011 from Civica

Congratulations to Mdm Begam for being awarded the TOP 5 BEST PERFORMING Library Staff 2011 from Civica (Fort Canning zone). According to her, she looks forward to going to work every day and had a wonderful time with the people she worked with and this has motivated her to give her best at work.

    


Community Laboratory Project - Pitching Day

On 3 August (Pitching Day), our Community Laboratory participants presented their community service project proposals to Mayor of SouthEast CDC, Dr Mohamed Maliki Osman. The resource panelists were very impressed by our girls' eloquence and their systematic approach to solving community problems using the 6-steps problem solving method. Well done, girls! National MEP Concert @ Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music
22 July 2011

Nine students from TKGS MEP was part of the National MEP Orchestra. This was a biennial event which puts together musical talents from all the 11 MEP schools in Singapore (Secondary and JC). Choir - SYF Outreach Event

On 23 July 2011, 50 girls from the Choir performed at the National Library as part of the SYF Outreach Event. Featuring performances from different performing arts groups across Singapore, the month-long Singapore Youth Festival (1¡ª29 July 2011) aims to highlight the vibrancy of the arts in schools and the creative expression of the students.



59th Prefects Investiture 2011

The 59th annual Prefects' Investiture was held on 15 July 2011 with the theme ¡°Costellazione¡±. ¡°Costellazione¡±, which means constellation in Italian, reflects the Prefectorial Board's aim to stand united and inspire fellow TKGians to be the best that they can be and to shine and be an inspiration to others. Singapore Junior Chemistry Olympiad

The second Singapore Junior Chemistry Olympiad (SJChO) is a competition organised by the Singapore National Institute of Chemistry (SNIC) in partnership with Raffles Institution and NUS High School of Math & Science, supported by the Ministry of Education and the National University of Singapore. Nearly 2500 of students from 37 schools participated in this year's competition. The first written examination was held on April 30 th , 2011 and the second practical round was held on 2nd of June, 2011 in Raffles Institution. Click here for more details.

The team led by Captain Emma Elisabeth Tang Seng Yee, Vice-Captains Nurul Diyana Bte Rosli and Emma Grace Lee See Yao won all the games and came in first. Well done girls!!! For results, click here.

   


TKGS CCA Leaders' Camp 2011

Our school, together with Quantum Leaning Network (QLN), organized a secondary 3 CCA leaders camp for us. It was held on the first week of the June holidays for 4 days and 3 nights. Truthfully, when I first heard about the camp, I had no interest at all. I thought it was just another camp spent in air-conditioned rooms where we would literally die of boredom. However, I was soon to be proven wrong. Click here for more details



Singapore Sports Award Recipients 2011
Kimberly Lim Min (Sec 3E7) & Jillian Lee Sook Ying (Sec 3/9)

The Singapore Sports Awards is Singapore's most prestigious annual recognition for sporting achievements. Since 1978. Meritorious awards for juniors were introduced to recognise the sporting achievements of Singapore's brightest and most promising youth athletes. Kimberly Lim Min from Sec 3E7 & Jillian Lee Sook Ying from Sec 3E9, both members of Tanjong Katong Girls' School's sailing team, received Meritorious Awards from our Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Singapore National Olympic Council Mr Teo Chee Hean at the Singapore Sports Awards 2011 ceremony held at the Orchard Hotel on 25 May 2011.

Both students received Meritorious Award (Event) for winning a Silver medal in the 2011 Team Racing World Championship Optimist Nations Cup at Langkawi, Malaysia. Kimberly also received Meritorious Award (Individual) for winning a Silver medal in the 2010 Asian Games at Guangzhou, China.

South East CDC
Community Laboratory Project

On 25 Jun 2011, 9 girls from our Prefectorial Board and Interact Club put up a Bollywood Performance together with 9 elderly members from the Tung Ling Community Outreach Programme for the Elderly at the South East District Meeting held at ITE College East. This performance was part of our collaboration with South East CDC on the Community Laboratory Project. Our girls practiced hard over the months of May and June and our performance was a success.

   


TKGS-HGS Parents' Leadership Symposium 2011

The inaugural TKGS-HGS Parents' Leadership Symposium 2011 was held successfully on 21 May 2011. Over 200 parents showed up in full force at TKGS, where the theme of the symposium was ¡°Preparing Your Children for an Increasingly Competitive World¡±. Participants were ready to learn more about parenting and discover better ways to raise their children. Click here for more details


International Friendship Day 2011

In the month of April 2011, the National Education (NE) committee organised a string of events for International Friendship Day (IFD) 2011. The theme for this year's IFD was "The World At Home!" and students participated in events like the"Hat Design Competition" on 8th April 2011 - TKGS Sports Day, and the Exchange Programme (online and physical) with students from the United World College South East Asia (UWCSEA) that spans from 1st to 21st April 2011.


Scienzation Day 2011
 

On 11th March 2011, the Science Department and the Mathematics Department co-organised Scienzation Day 2011, a Science and Math outreach programme for the Secondary 1 students and invitied Primary 6 students The theme for this year was "Ignite! Investigate! Innovate!" and students participated in a range of Science and Math activities designed and run by our very own TKGS teachers! Also, for the first time in Scienzation Day history, students from the VJC Astronomy Club ran the Planetarium station, sharing their passion and knowledge about the constellations and the stars.


Arts Alive!
Say it with Art  

In January 2011, the TKGS Art Club girls, Sec 4 O Level Art students and Sec 3 Non OBS students came together with the Alumni and a member of the School Advisory Committee. They designed and painted a series of wall murals in the school to depict the 4 School Values of Determination, Humility, Integrity and Graciousness and to illustrate their understanding of an accomplished young woman with character and grace. <More> <Photos>

   


Fathers@School Programme 2011
 

The Student Development and Leadership Department organized the first Fathers@School Programme 2011 in collaboration with MCYS. Sixty fathers and daughters turned up for the fun-filled and interactive workshop with Mr Albert King, the Director of Strategic Thinking at Wand Inspiration. <More>

Our TKGS team emerged top 8 among approximately 70 teams in the competition organised by MediaCorp TV Singapore Pte Ltd on 9 Feb 2011. The next round will be telecast in Mar 2011.<More>


TKGS SEC 1 COHORT CAMP 2011
17th January to 22nd January 2011

The Sec 1 Cohort Camp had just recently ended on a good note with a Campfire on 21 Jan 2011 . The objectives of the camp are to promote class bonding and to introduce students to social and emotional skills. During the camp, students were engaged in a series of activity-based workshops which focus on student leadership, effective communication, self-management, social awareness and relationship management.<More> <Photos>

All Sec 2 students had a weeklong of fun filled activities during the Sec 2 Cohort Camp (17-21 Jan). The objectives of the Sec 2 Cohort are to promote class bonding, inculcate Habits of Mind in our students and equip them with the 6-steps problem solving method in preparation for the Community Problem Solving Project work (CmPS). <More>

TKGS SEC 3 COHORT OBS CAMP 2011
17th January to 22nd January 2011
 

Our girls were challenged with action packed activities such as Rock Climbing, Inverse Tower conquering, grueling round island expeditions via kayaks, tri-kayaks, rowboats and a combination of Rafting with Land Crossings.

In True TKGS Spirit, our girls breezed through with quiet moments of Reflection , grew their Watch Tree acknowledging their fears balanced with their Hopes and Aspirations, and focused on their own Leadership and Team Building skills.<More>

  


TKGS ORIENTATION 2011
 

TKGS extended its warmest welcome to all Secondary One students as they embarked on an exciting leadership journey with the school. The next four years will be one that is going to be filled with joy and excitement for everyone from the moment they became a member of the TKGS family. The Sec 1 Orientation, which included school tours, class bonding games, Basic Psychomotor Aptitude Test (BPAT), LEGACY lessons, school cheers and mass dance sessions, was held over a span of 3 days. <More>

School Visit from Attached Midddle School of
Harbin Institute of Technology

On the 21st of January 2011, TKGS hosted a group of 194 guests from Heilongjiang China. There were in all 176 students, 17 teachers and 1 Principal from Attached Middle School of Harbin Institute of Technology. We had an interactive session in the studio with our guests which ended on a warm note of gifts exchange and school tour.
